Filter question.......?

My kids friend have asked if they can have their fish and I didn't care, but our tank isn't set up yet and when I checked, our filtering system doesn't have a filter in it. I know this is a stupid question, (I am sorry about this to!) but can I use a cut to fit air conditioning filter in it until I can buy the correct thing? We have NO place in our town that sells fish aquarium supplies so I have to wait to go out of town to get some. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Not a dumb question. Sounds like a good idea, only thing I would be concerned about would be if there's any chemicals from the manufacturer or what chemicals were used to make it. And are you talking about those disposable ones or the reusable ones? I wouldn't recommend the disposable ones, they might disintegrate and make a mess.

Ok here's an idea, how about get a pair of pantyhose, cut one side long enough to tie off. Stuff it with some cotton balls, knot it at the top??? Just make sure you rinse the pantyhose out good to make sure there's no residual soap left in them.
